Walter Storz founded Stowa, from STOrz WAlter, in 1927 in Germany's Black Forest region, settling in Pforzheim. Its history carries two seminal designs: in the 1930s Stowa produced some of the earliest Bauhaus dial wristwatches, inspired by the movement's functional purity, and in the 1940s it was one of only five makers of the B-Uhr navigation watches, placing it alongside A. Lange & Söhne and IWC in flieger history.

More about Stowa

History

Pforzheim's destruction in 1945 and the quartz decades reduced the company, until watchmaker Jörg Schauer acquired Stowa in 1996 and rebuilt it as a direct sale manufacture in Engelsbrand. Schauer's stewardship revived the Antea Bauhaus line and Flieger with obsessive fidelity and hand finished quality, at prices possible only without retail middlemen.

Two Legitimate Legacies

Stowa is one of very few brands entitled to both the Bauhaus dress watch and the original flieger, and its modern versions are reference executions of each: the Antea's proportions follow the 1930s originals, and Fliegers come with or without logo, with hand winding options and historically correct details. Movements are decorated ETA, Sellita, and Peseux bases, often with blued screws and rotor engraving visible through sapphire backs.

Prices run roughly 700 to 2,500 dollars, direct from Engelsbrand.

Why It Stands Out

  • Double birthright. Genuine originator status in both Bauhaus and flieger genres.
  • Schauer quality. Watchmaker led finishing above the price class.
  • Direct value. Factory pricing without retail markup.
  • German continuity. Nearly a century of Pforzheim area watchmaking.

Weaknesses

  • Sourced calibers. No in house movements despite manufacture credentials.
  • Direct only friction. No retail network means buying unseen.
  • Quiet marketing. Global awareness lags the product's legitimacy.
  • Slow resale. Secondary demand is steady but unspectacular.

Summary

Stowa is one of the most historically legitimate affordable German brands alive, with authentic claims to two of watchmaking's great design genres. The Flieger Klassik and Antea are reference versions of their categories at direct prices. For informed buyers, it is Pforzheim's quiet aristocracy.
