Seagull, formally the Tianjin Watch Factory, was founded in 1955 as one of communist China's first watch manufacturers, producing the country's inaugural domestically designed wristwatch, the Wuxing. Over decades it became the world's largest mechanical movement producer by volume, at times claiming to build roughly one quarter of all mechanical movements on earth, supplying countless brands worldwide.
The ST19 column wheel chronograph caliber, descended from a 1960s military project based on the Venus 175 architecture acquired from Switzerland, became its most celebrated product: a genuine column wheel chronograph selling in finished watches under 500 dollars. Seagull also mastered the tourbillon, offering the world's cheapest true tourbillons, plus perpetual calendars and minute repeater prototypes, all under its own brand and as movements for others.
Seagull's industrial importance dwarfs its consumer recognition: the ST series automatics and chronographs power much of the affordable mechanical market, including many microbrands. Its own watches, like the 1963 pilot chronograph reissue commemorating the air force commission, achieved international cult status for delivering column wheel mechanics at hobbyist prices.
Prices run roughly 100 to 3,000 dollars, tourbillons included.
