Richard Mille, a French executive with a background in watch and jewelry marketing, founded his brand in 2001 with Dominique Guenat, whose family firm Montres Valgine was based in Les Breuleux in the Swiss Jura. The debut RM 001 Tourbillon launched at a price near 200,000 dollars, unheard of for an unknown name. The pitch was explicit: a racing machine on the wrist, built like Formula 1 engineering rather than heritage watchmaking.
Movement development leaned on Audemars Piguet Renaud & Papi, the complications specialist, with automatic bases later supplied by Vaucher. The tonneau case, curved and built in three sections, became the brand's silhouette. Within two decades Richard Mille reached roughly 1.5 billion Swiss francs in revenue from only about 5,000 watches a year, placing it among the top Swiss brands by sales with the highest average price in the industry.
Richard Mille industrialized materials watchmaking. Carbon TPT and Quartz TPT layered composites, grade 5 titanium baseplates, and sapphire cases defined a new construction language. The RM 027 made for Rafael Nadal in 2010 weighed under 20 grams with its strap, tourbillon included.
Crucially, the watches are engineered to survive use. Nadal has worn his through decades of tournament tennis, and golfer Bubba Watson swings with his, which turned durability claims into public proof.
Mille inverted sponsorship: instead of athletes posing with watches, his athletes compete wearing them. Partnerships with McLaren and Ferrari, sprinters, and tennis players position the brand as sports equipment for the ultra wealthy. The strategy created a new category, luxury priced on engineering and celebrity physics rather than heritage.

Richard Mille is the most successful new luxury watch brand of the modern era, built on materials science, athlete proof durability, and fearless pricing. It is engineering theater at the highest level, and the market has ratified it with waitlists and premiums. Admire it as a case study in brand creation, but buy only if the design speaks to you, because you are paying for the idea rather than the caliber.
