Piaget began in 1874, when Georges Édouard Piaget set up a movement workshop on the family farm in La Côte-aux-Fées, high in the Neuchâtel Jura. For decades the firm supplied movements to other houses. The Piaget name was registered as a brand in 1943, and the company then built its own retail identity.

More about Piaget

History

The defining breakthroughs came fast. In 1957 Piaget launched caliber 9P, a hand wound movement just 2 mm thick. In 1960 the automatic 12P followed at 2.3 mm, the thinnest automatic movement in the world, thanks to an off center micro rotor. Thinness became the house religion.

During the 1960s and 1970s Piaget fused watchmaking with goldsmithing: integrated gold bracelets, hard stone dials in lapis, opal, and tiger eye, and a celebrity following from Andy Warhol to Jackie Kennedy. The Polo of 1979 distilled that jet set era into one integrated gold sports watch. Piaget joined the group that became Richemont in 1988.

Ultra Thin Mastery

Piaget holds one of the deepest records books in thinness. The 900P of 2014 merged case and movement into a watch 3.65 mm thick, then the thinnest mechanical watch made. The Altiplano Ultimate Concept of 2018 compressed a full mechanical watch into 2 mm, a record that stunned the industry.

The automatic 910P brought the same fused architecture to production models. Thinness at Piaget is not a stunt but a continuous engineering lineage from 1957.

Goldsmith Craft

Piaget calls itself a house of gold, and it operates its own gold case and bracelet ateliers. No other manufacture blends hard stone dials, chain bracelets, and movement making with the same fluency. The revived Andy Warhol watch and the Polo 79 in yellow gold from 2024 monetize exactly this archive.

Why It Stands Out

  • Thinness records. From the 9P of 1957 to the 2 mm Ultimate Concept, no maison has a longer continuous ultra thin lineage.
  • Gold and stone craft. In house gold work and hard stone dials give Piaget an aesthetic register rivals cannot copy.
  • True manufacture. Movements come from La Côte-aux-Fées and cases from its Geneva ateliers, a full vertical claim.
  • Archive power. The 1960s and 1970s catalog is a design goldmine that the current management is finally mining.

Weaknesses

  • Split identity. The market reads Piaget as half jeweler and half watchmaker, and the watch story gets lost in between.
  • Polo S reception. The 2016 steel Polo was widely criticized as derivative, muddying the sports line's revival.
  • Soft resale. Outside rare vintage and records pieces, secondary values trail the craft inside the watches.
  • Marketing shadow. Bulgari's louder thinness record campaign has claimed public attention that Piaget's engineering arguably earned first.

Summary

Piaget is the thinness manufacture and the most jeweler literate of the true movement makers. The Altiplano line delivers records grade engineering in dress clothing, while Polo 79 and the Warhol pieces revive a glamorous archive. Buy it for gold, stone, and slimness, and accept that the brand's prestige runs quieter than its substance deserves.
