Nomos was founded in January 1990 by Roland Schwertner, a Düsseldorf photographer and computer specialist, barely two months after the Berlin Wall fell. He registered the company in Glashütte, the Saxon town that had defined German watchmaking since 1845. The first four models arrived in 1992: Tangente, Orion, Ludwig, and Tetra, all drawing on Bauhaus and Deutscher Werkbund design.
Early watches used heavily reworked Peseux 7001 hand wound movements. Nomos then pulled production in house step by step, presenting its first fully in house automatic in 2005. The company remains privately held and independent, one of the very few in its price class.
The decisive move came in 2014 with the DUW swing system, a proprietary escapement developed for a reported eleven million euros. This freed Nomos from dependence on Swatch Group assortment supply, something almost no brand under 5,000 euros has achieved. In 2015 the neomatik caliber DUW 3001 arrived, an automatic just 3.2 mm thick.
Movements carry Glashütte signatures: three quarter plates, tempered blue screws, and Glashütte ribbing. The protected Glashütte designation requires at least half of movement value to be created in the town, and Nomos comfortably exceeds it.
Design happens at Berlinerblau, the company's studio in Berlin, while manufacturing stays in Saxony. The house style is typographic and reduced: slim numerals, long thin hands, and dials that breathe. The Metro of 2014 by designer Mark Braun won multiple design prizes and proved the language could evolve beyond the 1930s references.
Nomos has won dozens of international design awards, likely more than any other watch brand of its size. The look is now so identifiable that fashion minimalist brands imitate it at a tenth of the price.

Nomos is the most rational purchase in serious watchmaking: real manufacture content, real design pedigree, and honest pricing from a genuinely independent company. It rewards owners who value quiet correctness over wrist presence. Buy a Tangente or Metro as a design object with a manufacture heart, and accept that the market will never flatter you at resale time.
