Founded in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1881 by 19 year old Achille Ditesheim, Movado, Esperanto for always in motion, became one of Switzerland's most awarded manufactures, with the wandering hour Polyplan of 1912 and the beloved Ermeto travel watch of 1926. Mid century Movado ranked among serious chronograph and calendar makers, its M95 chronographs and triple calendars now prized vintage.

More about Movado

History

Everything changed with one dial: in 1947 Bauhaus trained designer Nathan George Horwitt created a black dial with a single gold dot at 12, symbolizing the sun at high noon. Adopted by Movado as the Museum Watch, and enshrined when MoMA accepted the design in 1960, the dot consumed the company. Acquired by the American North American Watch Company, later renamed Movado Group, the brand became a mall jewelry counter staple of quartz Museum dials, while the group grew into a licensing giant.

The Dot Economy

Modern Movado is essentially the Museum dial in endless variations, mostly quartz between 500 and 1,500 dollars, with the Movado Group also producing Coach, Tommy Hilfiger, and Hugo Boss watches. Occasional heritage efforts, like the 1881 Automatic and Datron reissues, nod to the manufacture past without sustained commitment.

Why It Stands Out

  • A design immortal. The Museum dial is among the most famous watch faces ever drawn.
  • Real manufacture past. Pre 1970 Movado stands with respected Swiss houses.
  • Vintage value. M95 chronographs deliver blue chip quality at accessible prices.
  • Distribution power. The group machine keeps the brand universally available.

Weaknesses

  • Hollowed substance. The modern catalog is quartz fashion trading on one 1947 idea.
  • Prestige erosion. Department store ubiquity destroyed luxury standing.
  • Neglected heritage. The manufacture archive sees only sporadic revival.
  • Poor resale. Modern pieces depreciate immediately and deeply.

Summary

Movado owns one perfect design and a forgotten great manufacture history, and monetizes only the former. The Museum Watch remains a legitimate design icon worth owning in its purest form. The knowing move is vintage: 1950s and 1960s Movado offers true haute horlogerie DNA at prices the dot never earned.
