Marathon was founded in 1939 by the Wein family in Canada, and by 1941 was producing timepieces for Allied forces. It remains one of the very few companies still manufacturing watches under active military contracts: since the Second World War, Marathon has continuously supplied US and allied forces, with watches built to MIL-SPEC government specifications rather than marketing interpretations of them.

More about Marathon

History

Production is Swiss, at La Chaux-de-Fonds, with the company headquartered in Canada. The catalog is essentially the current issue equipment: the General Purpose Mechanical field watch in fibershell, the Navigator pilot quartz, and the Search and Rescue dive line, all with tritium gas tubes for permanent illumination and government part numbers on the casebacks.

Actual Issue Equipment

Marathon's differentiation is bureaucratic authenticity: its watches exist because procurement contracts specify them, and civilians simply buy the same items. The GSAR automatic diver and quartz TSAR are built to genuine depth and shock requirements, and US Government marked versions are sold openly. No heritage story is required when the contracts never stopped.

Prices run roughly 300 to 2,500 dollars.

Why It Stands Out

  • Living military contracts. Actual current issue watches, not heritage cosplay.
  • Specification honesty. MIL-SPEC engineering decides every feature.
  • Tritium visibility. Permanent illumination suits genuine field use.
  • Continuous history. Eight decades of uninterrupted military supply.

Weaknesses

  • Utilitarian aesthetics. Function first design limits versatility off duty.
  • Small sizing debates. Issue dimensions like 34 mm divide modern tastes.
  • Premium for provenance. Comparable specs exist cheaper without the contracts.
  • Modest movements. Standard Sellita and quartz calibers throughout.

Summary

Marathon sells the rarest thing in tool watches: the real thing, still under contract. The GSAR and the little GPM are the enthusiast picks, government part numbers included. For buyers who want their military watch actually military, the choice is nearly a category of one.
