Hermès began in 1837 as Thierry Hermès's harness workshop in Paris, and saddlery still shapes everything the house makes. Watches entered early: a 1912 photograph shows Jacqueline Hermès wearing a pocket watch strapped to her wrist in a leather holder. Between the wars the store retailed and cobranded fine Swiss watches for its clientele.
The serious commitment came in 1978, when the company founded La Montre Hermès in Bienne, Switzerland. That same year the designer Henri d'Origny drew the Arceau, with its asymmetric stirrup lugs and sloping numerals. The Cape Cod followed in 1991, and Martin Margiela created its famous double tour wraparound strap in 1998.
Hermès then bought real watchmaking substance: 25 percent of Vaucher Manufacture in 2006, plus stakes in a case maker and a dial maker. The Slim d'Hermès of 2015 introduced an in house micro rotor caliber and a typeface commissioned from Philippe Apeloig. The H08 of 2021 gave the house a credible masculine sports line.
Hermès treats time as a playground rather than a spec sheet. With the movement studio Agenhor it created Le Temps Suspendu, which parks the hands on command and lets them find the correct time again later, a GPHG winner in 2011. L'Heure Impatiente counts down to an anticipated moment and rings a chime.
The métiers side is equally strong: enamel, straw marquetry, and leather appliqué dials from its own ateliers, and straps from the same leather workshops as the Birkin. No other fashion house backs its watch poetry with this much owned craft.

Hermès is the only fashion house that became a genuine watchmaker, quietly buying manufacture capability while keeping its playful voice. The Arceau complications and Slim d'Hermès are the connoisseur picks, the Cape Cod double tour the style icon. Buy it for wit and craft executed with real mechanical substance, and let others underestimate it.
