Three British entrepreneurs, Mike France, Chris Ward, and Peter Ellis, founded the company in 2004 around a then radical idea: sell Swiss made watches directly online, stripping retail margins. Early watches undercut comparable brands by multiples and built a loyal forum following. In 2014 the company merged with its Swiss supplier Synergies Horlogères in Biel, becoming a genuine manufacturer.

More about Christopher Ward

History

That merger produced Calibre SH21 in 2014, celebrated as the first commercially viable British brand in house movement in some fifty years, with five days of reserve. The modern breakout came in 2022 to 2023: the Bel Canto, a chiming jump hour under 4,000 pounds that won a GPHG prize, and The Twelve, an integrated bracelet sports watch that captured the category's demand at a third of Swiss prices. Growth since has been explosive.

The Direct Model Matured

Christopher Ward proved direct to consumer could scale beyond microbrand status: real R&D, an in house complication module for the Bel Canto, and consistent case and dial quality from Biel production. The value equation remains the core promise, roughly half to a third of equivalent Swiss retail brands.

The 2020s design language under Adrian Buchmann gave the brand its own face, ending the homage era criticisms. The twin flags logo and asymmetric branding remain debated, but no longer dismissed.

Why It Stands Out

  • Unmatched value engineering. Chronometer grade Swiss watches routinely under 1,500 pounds.
  • Real complication capability. Bel Canto brought chiming watchmaking below 4,000 pounds, a genuine first.
  • British manufacturing story. SH21 and in house modules give the brand technical legitimacy.
  • Community trust. Transparent pricing, 60 day returns, and long warranties built rare loyalty.

Weaknesses

  • Brand prestige lag. The name still signals value, not status, to non enthusiasts.
  • Resale pressure. Aggressive retail value plus constant releases suppress secondary prices.
  • Catalog churn. Rapid variant releases can exhaust and confuse collectors.
  • Design identity still young. The twin flags era is barely a decade old against century old rivals.

Summary

Christopher Ward is the most consequential value brand of the internet era, and the Bel Canto moment turned it from bargain hunter's secret into genuine watchmaking story. The Twelve and Bel Canto are the modern signatures, the C60 the workhorse gateway. Buy on merit and hold; prestige is slowly catching up to the product.
