Louis Ulysse Chopard founded the firm in 1860 in Sonvilier, in the Bernese Jura, building precision pocket watches that sold as far as the Russian court. The family line ended commercially in 1963, when Paul André Chopard sold the company to Karl Scheufele III, a jeweler and watchmaker from Pforzheim, Germany. The Scheufele family has owned Chopard outright ever since.
Today the house is jointly led by the siblings Karl Friedrich Scheufele, who drives the watch side, and Caroline Scheufele, who leads jewelry and the feminine lines. That split explains the brand's twin identity: red carpet jeweler and serious Fleurier manufacture. Chopard has been the official partner of the Cannes Film Festival since 1998 and makes the Palme d'Or itself.
In 1996 Karl Friedrich opened Chopard Manufacture in Fleurier to build movements worthy of the founder's initials. The first caliber, L.U.C 1.96, a micro rotor automatic developed with input from Michel Parmigiani, is still cited among the finest automatic movements ever made. The L.U.C Quattro of 2000 stacked four barrels for roughly nine days of reserve.
The L.U.C Full Strike minute repeater of 2016, with gongs machined from sapphire crystal, won the Aiguille d'Or at the GPHG in 2017. Many L.U.C references carry the Geneva Seal or COSC certification, and the finishing competes with houses at twice the price.
Chopard runs its own gold foundry, unusual for any watch or jewelry house. In 2018 it committed to 100 percent ethical gold across all production, years ahead of the industry. Racing heritage runs deep too: the partnership with the Mille Miglia rally has produced annual chronographs since 1988, reflecting Karl Friedrich's own classic car passion.

Chopard is two brands in one family owned house: a red carpet jeweler the public knows and a Fleurier manufacture collectors underrate. The L.U.C line is the quiet masterpiece, the Alpine Eagle the commercial bridge, and ethical gold the differentiator with a conscience. Buy L.U.C on the secondary market for finishing that embarrasses famous names, and enjoy owning the best kept open secret in Swiss watchmaking.
