Casio is not a watchmaker in the Swiss sense, and that is precisely the point. A calculator company that wandered into horology, it built the toughest watch on earth, the most worn watch on earth, and a culture crossing icon in the G Shock. No brand in this database delivers more function per dollar.
Tadao Kashio founded Kashio Seisakujo in Tokyo in 1946, and with his three brothers built Japan's first compact all electric calculator in 1957. Watches came late: the Casiotron of 1974 was the world's first digital watch with an automatic calendar. Casio approached the wrist as an electronics problem, not a craft tradition.
The pivotal moment came in 1983 with the G Shock DW5000C, engineered by Kikuo Ibe after he shattered a pocket watch his father gave him. The design brief was the Triple 10: survive a 10 meter drop, resist 10 bar of water, and run 10 years on one battery. Ibe built roughly 200 prototypes, finding the answer when he watched a rubber ball bounce and realized the module could float inside the case.
The decades since layered on sensors, solar charging, radio sync, and premium metal. Baby G arrived in 1994, the flagship MR G in 1996, and the elegant Oceanus line in 2004. By 2017 cumulative G Shock shipments passed 100 million units.
The G Shock succeeded by absorbing every culture that touched it. Skaters and streetwear adopted it in the 1990s, hip hop put it in lyrics, and military and police units made it de facto issue kit worldwide. Few products move between a fashion runway and a combat deployment without changing.
The engineering remains the substance under the style. Hollow case structures, floating modules, and gel dampers deliver shock resistance that marketing does not need to exaggerate. The GA2100 of 2019, nicknamed the CasiOak for its octagonal bezel, became a global sellout and pulled in buyers who would otherwise have bought Swiss.
Casio's spec stack has been industry leading for decades: Tough Solar charging, Multiband 6 radio time sync, Triple Sensor altimeter, barometer, and compass modules, and now Bluetooth phone linking. A mid range G Shock quietly does things no mechanical watch at any price can do. Accuracy, when synced, is effectively perfect.
At the top, MR G cases titanium in traditional Japanese metal craft, including hammered tsuiki finishes by working artisans, at prices past 3,000 dollars. Oceanus offers slim solar radio titanium with genuine finishing polish. These lines test how far the brand name can stretch upward.
The F91W, released in 1989, may be the most worn watch on the planet, still in production at roughly 20 dollars. It is unchanged, unkillable, and beloved with equal sincerity by schoolchildren, soldiers, and collectors. As a study in honest industrial design, it has few equals in any product category.
Its cultural reach is the brand's range in miniature. The same company sells a 20 dollar classic and a hand hammered titanium flagship. Both are unmistakably Casio.

Casio built its horological legend on an engineer's grief over a broken watch, and the result was a product philosophy the Swiss cannot answer: function, toughness, and price honesty. The G Shock is one of the few watches that is simultaneously equipment, fashion, and folklore. Its ceiling is prestige, and its premium experiments remain debatable. But judged by watches on wrists and problems solved, Casio may be the most successful watch company alive.
