Greek silversmith Sotirio Bulgari founded his Roman shop in 1884, building the jeweler of the dolce vita. Watches became serious in 1977 with Bvlgari Bvlgari, whose logo engraved bezel, inspired by ancient coins and shaped with input from Gérald Genta's circle, became one of the bestselling luxury watch designs of its era. The Serpenti, a snake coiling around the wrist since the 1940s, remains the icon of its jewelry watchmaking.
Bvlgari bought the Gérald Genta and Daniel Roth brands in 2000, absorbing their Le Sentier manufacture and complication know how. LVMH acquired Bvlgari in 2011. Movement production sits in Le Sentier with cases and dials in La Chaux-de-Fonds, a real vertical setup.
Since 2014 the Octo Finissimo line, designed under Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani, has taken world thinness records again and again: tourbillon, minute repeater, automatic, chronograph GMT, perpetual calendar, and more. The Octo Finissimo Ultra of 2022 compressed a mechanical watch to 1.80 mm, and a chronometer certified version pushed to 1.70 mm in 2024. The sandblasted titanium Finissimo aesthetic became one of the few genuinely new luxury sports watch identities of the century.
