Édouard Bovet founded the house in 1822, building a business unlike any other: luxury watches made in Fleurier, Switzerland, and sold in Canton, China. Bovet pocket watches with enamel miniatures and visible balance wheels so dominated that market that a Bovet became a generic word for watch in 19th century China. The firm pioneered decorated movements meant to be admired through display backs, two centuries early.

More about Bovet

History

After a long dormancy, entrepreneur Pascal Raffy acquired Bovet in 2001 and consolidated its suppliers, including the Dimier movement manufacture, which even produces its own hairsprings. Headquarters occupy the medieval Château de Môtiers above Fleurier. Production stays under roughly a thousand pieces a year, largely hand decorated.

Convertible Cases and Grand Astronomy

The signature Amadeo case converts without tools between wristwatch, pocket watch, and table clock, a direct nod to the house's pocket watch roots. Crowns at 12 o'clock and fleurisanne hand engraving keep the 19th century identity alive. Artistic crafts include miniature painting and mother of pearl marquetry.

The complication summit is the Récital series with inclined movements shaped like writing desks. The Récital 22 Grand Récital, a rotating earth tourbillon with perpetual calendar, won the Aiguille d'Or at the 2018 GPHG, watchmaking's top prize.

Why It Stands Out

  • Genuine Chinese trade heritage. The 19th century Canton story is unique and documented, not marketing.
  • Deep vertical integration. Its own hairsprings put Bovet in a tiny club even among haute horlogerie names.
  • Artistic craft density. Engraving, enamel, and painting are done at a level few houses sustain.
  • Prize validated complications. The 2018 Aiguille d'Or confirmed the Récital line's seriousness.

Weaknesses

  • Polarizing style. Crowns at 12, bows, and ornament read as theatrical to modern minimalist taste.
  • Weak liquidity. Secondary prices fall far below retail for most references.
  • Low awareness. The brand is barely known outside serious collecting circles.
  • One owner dependence. Strategy and taste flow from Pascal Raffy alone.

Summary

Bovet is a genuinely singular house: Chinese trade history, château headquarters, in house hairsprings, and award winning astronomical machines. It rewards the collector who values craft density over brand recognition and resale. Buy the 19Thirty for the entry romance or a Récital secondhand, where the discounts are enormous and the watchmaking is not.
