Armin Strom opened his watch shop in Burgdorf in 1967 and made his name as a master of skeletonization, hand cutting movements into lacework. His one man artistry earned international commissions and records for miniature skeleton work. He remained a respected specialist rather than a manufacturer.

More about Armin Strom

History

In 2006 the brand was reborn as a true manufacture when Serge Michel, whose family was close to Strom, and watchmaker Claude Greisler took over. They opened a purpose built facility in Biel in 2009 and launched the first fully in house caliber soon after. The founder's skeleton philosophy survives in openworked dials across the catalog.

Resonance as a Specialty

Armin Strom turned an obscure physical phenomenon into its flagship identity. The Mirrored Force Resonance of 2016 coupled two independent balances through a patented resonance clutch spring, making the synchronization visible on the dial side. Later pieces expanded the idea: the Dual Time Resonance with two full movements in one case, and the Masterpiece series.

The Gravity Equal Force applied a different chronometric idea, a stop works mechanism that uses only the optimal portion of the mainspring. Production stays in the low hundreds per year, all with visibly architectural movements.

Why It Stands Out

  • Ownership of resonance. Alongside F.P. Journe, Armin Strom is the only maker with a serious, visible resonance system, and its spring coupling is unique.
  • True manufacture. Calibers are designed and built in Biel, unusual for a company this small.
  • Architectural honesty. Movements are constructed to be seen, continuing the founder's skeleton legacy.
  • Collector value niche. Prices undercut comparable independent complications from bigger names.

Weaknesses

  • Awareness gap. The brand is respected inside collector circles and unknown outside them.
  • Complex aesthetic. Open dials and technical layouts polarize buyers seeking classic beauty.
  • Thin liquidity. Few pieces trade secondhand, and discounts to retail can be steep.
  • Scale risk. A small team supporting complicated calibers means service depends on one facility.

Summary

Armin Strom is the engineer's independent: resonance and constant force made visible, built in house, and priced below the famous names that offer less mechanics. The Mirrored Force Resonance is the signature piece and the best argument. Buy it for horological substance over social recognition.
